Introduction

The designation “architect” is generally reserved by law or custom to a person who is professionally and academically qualified and generally registered/licensed/certified to practice architecture in the jurisdiction in which he practices and is responsible for advocating the fair and sustainable development, welfare, and the cultural expression of society’s habitat in terms of space, forms, and historical context. As such the training of architects must encompass those expected skill and knowledge.

The following attributes, architectural knowledge and skills are for inclusion in the programme of study.

Characteristics and Attributes of Architectural Graduates:

LAM PART I

At LAM Part I graduates should have the ability to:

1.   produce designs at appropriate complexity and scales up to the schematic level using appropriate communication tools,

2.  demonstrate understanding of cultural, historical and established architectural theories, philosophies and context,

3.  demonstrate creativity, innovation and imagination and translate these into an architectural design solution,

4. develop the design to a level for regulatory application for Building Plan submission that comply to the requirements of local authorities, including understanding of building regulations, basic building construction and materials, environmental considerations and building services,

5. translate the design into construction drawings with appropriate construction details and use established architectural drawing convention,

6.  work in a team and participate in the design process.

LAM PART II

At LAM Part II graduates should have the ability to:

1.  engage imagination, think creatively and innovate to develop and produce architectural design of appropriate complexity and scale that meet the requirements of functionality and aesthetics,

2. identify problems, apply analysis and critical judgment, formulate and translate the design brief into functional design that comply with design objectives and clients requirements,

3. apply and integrate knowledge of architectural principles, technology, environment, culture and social, urban design and planning principles in architectural design,

4.  apply appropriate graphic, model and communication tools to produce design, construction, detailed drawings and reports,

5.  work in a team, able to collaborate and demonstrate understanding of inputs of other allied professions within the building industry,

6. recognize the impact of architectural works upon society, culture, economy and environment, and the importance of ethics within the profession,

7.  demonstrate awareness of cost implication of various design options and material specification,

8.  produce architectural design that comply with the requirements of regulatory authorities,

9.  demonstrate understanding of architectural management and the architect’s role within the framework of architectural practice and leadership in the building industry.
